It seems like Caroline and Stefan are on their murderous path once again. This time the episode begins with them trying to literally scare a guy to death, but Caroline doesn’t pull that off, so she compels him to essentially…kill himself? In a weird way. After their victim dies, they decide to do some karaoke. At karaoke they compel a few students to study at the bar and have their singing session when Tyler and Matt walk in originally just wanting food, but now they got a lot more than what they bargained for: A fight against Stefan and Caroline. Caroline starts quizzing them on what they know about her, and in the end she flips a coin to pick who she kills. Tyler, being Tyler, gets upset over her being so bitchy and attempts to kill her and stab her with a piece of wood. However, because Caroline is a vampire, she manages to vamp-run and get Matt in front of her, meaning Tyler ends up stabbing Matt instead.
However, when Stefan’s mother comes waltzing in, Caroline decides to stab Stefan and run away because she knows if Stefan’s humanity comes back, then hers will to. Matt is taken to the hospital by Tyler, where Elena offers to help heal him with her blood, but he refuses. Elena asks why he’s refusing her blood, and he says he hates vampires.
-Momma Don’t Love No More
Damon and Elena have breakfast with Lily, where she asks if Elena misses being human. She says she does miss it sometimes, which is a clever foreshadowing to the finale, probably. Lily wants to know when they’ll be able to save her friends from the 1903 prison world, but Damon is stalling because he wants to save Stefan first. Elena gets a text from Jo saying people are being attacked at Whitmore, and she leaves. Damon and Lily head out to Whitmore on their own, except they’re on their way to save Stefan. On the ride there Lily reveals that she knows about the cure that Bonnie gave him, and she understands why Damon might be cautious about losing Elena. It’s like mother-son bonding but not because momma Salvatore really has no emotion left.
When they get to Whitmore, Lily falters and reveals that she was not on her way back to her boys in 1903 when she got off the ship, and she doesn’t remember what it feels like to be a human mother anymore. She doesn’t love her boys; she’s been trying with all her heart to be the woman they knew but it’s been so long that she just can’t do it anymore. So instead of trying to save Stefan like she said she would, she leaves. Damon calls Elena and she convinces him to get Lily to at least lie to Stefan to get his humanity back. But in order to make that happen, Lily wants a guarantee that Damon will help let her friends in 1903 out. He gives her the ascendant that she needs to do that and she does her part of the bargain: She walks into the bar and convinces Stefan that she is truly sorry for leaving and that she just wants her boy back, and it works! Stefan’s humanity is back.
-Enzo’s Issues
Enzo was planning on bringing Sarah Salvatore back to the Salvatore residence, but when Lily Salvatore answers the door, he picks up and leaves with Sarah, explaining that she’s the woman who turned him and she is the most dreadful person ever. In flashbacks, it’s revealed that Enzo, who went by Lorenzo, was sick with consumption (aka tuberculosis) when he met Lily. He’d been trying to get aboard a ship from South Hampton, England, but they wouldn’t let him on because he was contagious, so Lily intervened and helped him get aboard to see the ship doctor. Unfortunately for him, the doctor was a con-artist who would misdiagnose patients on purpose and give them placebos. Lily was able to compel the truth out of him and in Enzo’s dying moments she had him drink her blood and she turned him. And when Enzo woke up, the lying doctor was the only one left alive on the ship (everyone else killed by Lily) so he fed and moved on. After taking Sarah away from the Salvatore mansion, he tells her everything about her uncles Damon and Stefan, but when he tries to compel it out of her, she injects him with vervain. She takes him to her place where she continues to interrogate him about why she doesn’t know anything about her family and what’s going on, and he divulges the information she requests. Enzo tells Sarah that he wanted to turn her into a monster and ditch her like what Lily did to him, so since the vervain is out of her system, he almost compels her to leave to South Hampton, but she wants the choice he never had, and he agrees to leave her alone. Because he’s kind of nice, apparently.
-Human Jealousy and Magic Vampires
At the end of the episode Elena admits to Damon she was jealous of Jo announcing her pregnancy, and he asks her that if things could be different, what would she do, but she says they can’t be different and she can’t do anything. Pretty clear she wants to be a human now, guys. Then Damon gets a call from Jo to meet her at the hospital because her dad wants to know where the ascendant is. Damon says he gave it to Lily, and Jo says she needs to get it back. Why? Because the six friends of hers trapped in 1903 are known as Heretics, syphoners like Kai that can syphon the magic out of anything. And when Lily turned them she gave them a permanent magic source: Themselves. So now you have six vampires with Kai’s abilities and the bloodlust of vampirism.
