Sara learns that Rex Tyler was killed, and Vixen suspects Mick to be the culprit. Sara doesn’t believe it and thinks the real perp is a time-traveler the Legends have been tracking.
As Ray and Nate are training, they damage the Waverider, exposing everyone to the timestream. Nate is sucked out and Ray goes after him. The two end up in 17th century Japan during the Edo period. A kind woman, Masako, and her father, Ichiro, take in Nate. There, he learns that Masako is being forced to marry the murderous Shogun leader Tokugawa.
Ray, who’s not so lucky, is taken prisoner by the Shogun and Tokugawa, who takes control of Ray’s ATOM suit and intends to use it for his own nefarious purposes.
On board the Waverider, Sara plans a rescue mission and forces Mick and Vixen to work together. Jax and Martin have fixed the Waverider, but they discover an anomaly—instead of a normal count of 35 compartments, Gideon counts 36, igniting Martin’s curiosity.
The Shogun arrive at Masako’s and demand to know if she’s harboring any foreigners. Nate reveals himself and attempts to defend Masako, thinking that his Citizen Steel powers will manifest. They don’t, and the Head Samurai stabs him for his defiance.
Martin and Jax continue their investigation where they find a secret door. The two enter and discover that it’s an armory. However, the room automatically activates and they find an archived message from a 2056 Barry Allen.
Searching for Nate and Ray, the team unknowingly enter Tokugawa’s dwelling and find him in the ATOM suit. Tokugawa blasts Mick, and Sara faces off with the Head Samurai. Meanwhile, Ray has found a way to escape. As Sara, Mick, and Vixen retreat, they run into Ray.
The team finally finds Nate, but he refuses to leave. History has recorded Tokugawa to be a ruthless leader, killing every woman he’s ever married. In addition, Tokugawa has the ATOM suit which will allow him to conquer the region. They decide to stay and fight, and Ray will continue to train Nate to control his Citizen Steel abilities.
As Ray reveals to Nate the ATOM suit’s vulnerabilities, his pent up anger and frustration surfaces. Once the ATOM suit is detroyed, Ray’s life’s work and his only access to superhuman abilities will be gone.
Later, Ichiro tells Ray about his son, who Tokugawa forced to perform sepukku (ritualistic suicide), and emphasizes the importance of the man versus a suit of armor. However, common sense still prevails as Ichiro provides Ray with his son’s armor in order to face off with Tokugawa.
Nate shares his fears with Masako. Without the ability to become Citizen Steel, he may not be able to protect her. Masako gives him sagely advice—just let it come naturally. At that moment, Tokugawa arrives and quickly blasts Nate. As Tokugawa prepares for a final kill shot, Ray arrives, dressed in armor, and Mick hits Tokugawa with fire.
Sara faces off with the Shogun, defeating a number of them easily. When she becomes overwhelmed, Vixen powers up with her totem and joins the fight. Mick runs through the forest and, for some reason, ninjas ambush him.
As Sara and Vixen become overwhelmed, a ninja arrives and saves them—it’s Mick, who brags that “ninjas are real.”
Ray continues to face off with Tokugawa, successfully damaging a few modules on the ATOM suit. However, Tokugawa manages to disarm Ray from his katana sword. Masako quickly steps in and takes on Tokugawa. When he overpowers her, Nate appears—already transformed into Citizen Steel.
Sara and the Head Samurai, swords drawn, run full speed at each other. Using a hidden dagger to gain the upper hand, Sara manages to fatally injure the Head Samurai.
Citizen Steel damages the ATOM suit’s critical systems, overloading it and killing Tokugawa in an explosion of bright white light.
The Legends say their goodbyes and Ray hands back the katana blade to its rightful owner—Masako. They are revealed to be the ancestors of Tatsu Yamashiro, a.k.a. Katana.
On board the Waverider, Vixen makes peace with Mick by gifting him a throwing star. This way, he can have proof of meeting ninjas.
As the Legends take off with Sara at the helm, Martin and Jax debate whether or not to tell the team about future Barry Allen’s message.
Legendary Moment(s) - Mick’s fanboy moments for everything ninja. He also references one of my favorite childhood ’80s low-budget ninja movies: Ninja III: The Domination (1984). Ray and Nate paired off as mentor and student. Who knew that the show would find someone nerdier than Ray?
Thoughts for Tomorrow - DC’s Legends of Tomorrow ups the fun and creates a deeper mystery in “Shogun.” New crew members Vixen and Nate add to the existing great Legends chemistry. With the discovery of future Barry Allen’s message, the show has certainly deepened my interest in the overall larger story arc for Season 2.
