Liv now knows how Lowell gets his brains and causes a major strain in their relationship at first, as she discovers that Blaine is the one killing homeless teenagers and providing a “zombie meals on wheels,” which Lowell was unknowingly benefitting from. The confrontation leads to Lowell telling Liv he loves her. Unfortunately for him, her initial reaction was anything but great. Lowell doesn’t get time as Liv gets called to a scene.
War veteran, Everett Adams. is found dead on paintball field and Liv gets a taste of the soldier’s brain, which provided an interesting look at the man’s life and how even far removed from the battlefield, Everett still dealt with post-traumatic stress. The investigation led Babineaux and Liv to his ex-wife, Penny, his young daughter, and Penny’s husband, Shawn (played by Veronica Mars’ Percy Daggs III). Immediately from their introduction, something just felt a bit off and as the pair investigate, and Liv’s visions become more vivid, things become abundantly clear who the murderer really is. The case of the week was relatively tight and emotionally engaging considering the victim, his experiences, and the interesting way the murder was actually committed (by drone).
The veteran’s brains also gave us some interesting and sad moments with Liv, especially the nightmare and how she dealt with it. The brain of the week also gave us a really interesting moment after Liv and Lowell make up and conspire to kill Blaine after what he’s done. With Lowell setting the bait and inviting Blaine over, because he was apparently a bit of a fanboy, Liv is set up on a rooftop ready to pull the trigger. With the target set and ready, Liv has a crisis of conscious and questions what it means to go through with what she and Lowell were planning. Unfortunately for her, that hesitation and inaction leads Lowell to take matter into his own hands and attempts to skewer Blaine…who was ready and retaliated with a gun pointed at Lowell’s head and a quick trigger finger. This all happens while Liv stands across the street on a rooftop, unable to do anything. But, he can’t be dead dead can he?
Meanwhile, Major’s got a new possible lead and obviously it leads the stubborn man directly into the path of Blaine and his henchmen. Armed with his brain research, he tries to hit a gym and (not so subtly) ask around about human brains that provide a growth hormone. He’s initially met with understandably weirded out stares from one of the trainers at the gym. But, while the trainer’s not buying it one of Blaine’s men does and tracks him down (for the second time, those keeping score at home) and beats him up again in an attempt to get answers out of him. Luckily (for Major), he manages to get ahold of his gun and shoot the man…only to have him disappear when Babineaux gets to him. With no signs of blood and only a shell casing, the detective finds it all hard to believe and questions Major’s sanity, giving off that foreboding feeling that will probably lingering around the poor guy for the rest of the season.
Considering how last week’s episode ended, it’s kind of surprising that the Ravi story didn’t really develop more but, it was great that he wasn’t turned. At least from what we saw this hour.
So, what did you think of the hour? How bad is it looking for Major right now and what are the odds that he survives the season? Who else thinks there’s a slight chance that Lowell might be alive?
